Silas: Thank you, Dr. Tam, for your leadership

June 19, 2025 (Ottawa, ON) – The Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions (CFNU) extends its heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Theresa Tam on the conclusion of her tenure as Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer (CPHO).

Dr. Tam guided the country through multiple public health crises and unprecedented challenges since her appointment in June 2017, including COVID-19, H1N1, Ebola and more. As Canada’s national public health leader, she was instrumental in the country’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic and oversaw Canada’s largest-ever vaccination campaign.

“The CFNU thanks Dr. Tam for her leadership during tumultuous times,” said CFNU President Linda Silas. “Her emphasis on health equity and public health renewal has been important in advancing the health and wellbeing of Canadians.”

The CFNU encourages continued investment in frontline public health infrastructure and a comprehensive pandemic preparedness plan that centres the concerns of frontline workers, and looks forward to a robust and inclusive public health future guided and inspired by Dr. Tam’s legacy.
