The following letter was sent to Peter Julian, Member of Parliament, on December 11, 2020.
Dear Mr. Julian,
I am writing you to offer my strongest support for Bill C-213, An Act to enact the Canada Pharmacare Act.
A national, universal, single-payer pharmacare program is needed more urgently than ever before. Millions of people across the country have lost their jobs due to COVID-19, and for a great many of them, they have also lost access to an employer-sponsored drug plan.
Through your bill, we can finally begin laying the legislative groundwork for the implementation of a program that an overwhelming plurality of people from coast to coast to coast have been supporting for generations.
Modelled on the Canada Health Act, and following the Liberal government’s own advisory council’s recommendations, this bill embodies the very vision for pharmacare that Canada so desperately needs.
For this historic bill to pass, it will need the support of a broad coalition of civil society organizations, and a courageous and principled majority of parliamentarians.
Canada’s nurses are proud to stand with you and the NDP in enthusiastic support of this bill. I wish you all the best as it works its way through Parliament.
Sincerely,
Linda Silas, CFNU President
