CFNU submission to the pharmacare Advisory Council

Pharmacare
"While some vested interests continue to defend it, there is little doubt that the status quo cannot be permitted to continue. With billions of dollars in waste and thousands of lives lost and compromised each year under the current patchwork system, there is a better way forward for Canada."

The Advisory Council on the Implementation of National Pharmacare has been tasked with conducting an economic and social assessment of domestic and international models of pharmacare, working with provincial/territorial and indigenous leaders, and consulting with Canadians, experts and stakeholders from relevant fields.

The Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions (CFNU) has been advocating for the implementation of national pharmacare for more than two decades. It has presented its support for national pharmacare at several Council of the Federation meetings, spoken directly with federal and provincial health ministers, and included pharmacare as a key plank in its election campaigns. As a key stakeholder representing nurses across Canada, we are pleased to contribute to the work of the Advisory Council on the Implementation of Pharmacare. Our submission includes an outline of our top priorities for ensuring an effective and equitable pharmacare program, and addresses the questions of which drugs should be covered and how such a program could be financed.
