March 8 is International Women’s Day, recognized globally as an opportunity to celebrate women’s achievements.
We know that the COVID-19 pandemic has had harsh impacts on women in Canada, and around the world.
From our predominantly female nurse workforce on the frontlines to the many women who have given up paid work to care for children or family members.
Quite simply, the pandemic has set gender equity back decades. This can be said for nursing too.
Women’s labour force participation is at its lowest point in 30 years. We’re losing hard fought ground on women’s equality. We can’t go back.
If Canada is going to emerge from this crisis as a global leader, women, young workers, “spicy” older women and racialized workers need to be a priority in our recovery plans. No one should be left behind.
Canada’s nurses join with the Canadian Labour Congress in calling on our federal government for action.
We need a plan that puts women at the heart of our recovery. That means taking action on pay equity, improving conditions for care workers (including nurses), and investing in national, high-quality, affordable child care and better care for our seniors.
