Nurses unions stand up for public health care at Halifax rally

Statement

Silas: Together, we will protect public health care. Together, we got this.

“Public health care is not for sale,” declared Linda Silas, president of the Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions (CFNU), at an anti-privatization and pro-public health care rally in Halifax today. Nurse union leaders from across the country joined Silas as a part of the Canadian Health Coalition’s rally during the Council of the Federation meetings.

“Keeping health care public is critical to ensuring that every single person who lives and works in Canada has the care they need when they need it,” said Silas. “In health care, the conditions of work are the conditions of care. Nurses everywhere know, the fight for safe working conditions and safe staffing is the fight for safe patient care. Privatization only threatens to worsen staffing, to worsen patient outcomes, and we will stand up together against it.”

Silas emphasized that solutions to the staffing crisis plaguing Canada’s health care systems are within reach.

The CFNU has been calling on all levels of government to work together on key evidence-based solutions to support the robust recovery of our health care systems by:

  • Implementing nurse-patient ratios to address unsustainable workloads and improve patient care
  • Collaborating on a pan-Canadian approach to health workforce planning data
  • Enforcing mandatory long-term care standards to address the safety and quality of seniors’ care
  • Ensuring everyone has access to primary care in their community

“It will take every one of us working together in solidarity to truly ensure no one is left behind. Together, we made history and passed legislation in the House of Commons, that sets the groundwork for universal single-payer pharmacare,” said Silas. “Together, we will push our leaders to listen to voices on the front lines. Together, we will ensure a robust public health care system where everyone has access to care at all ages, from a child’s first breath to relying on a primary care provider, to aging with dignity. Together, we’ve got this.”
