The Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions recommends that universities and colleges conduct a risk assessment at the point of care before any tasks are undertaken within a health care setting. Student nurses caring for presumed and confirmed cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) or involved in any screening protocols must be provided with the appropriate fit-tested personal protective equipment in order to perform their duties in a safe and effective manner.
While the protection of nurses and other workers in health care environments is necessary and vital, observing these protocols with regards to vulnerable populations (such as seniors and those in long-term care settings) is especially critical.
“If at any time, a nursing student feels unsafe in the performance of their duties, they should immediately report this to their supervisor,” cautioned CFNU President Linda Silas.
“Be prudent and stay safe.”
