The Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions (CFNU) stands in solidarity with the Alberta Teachers’ Association as they face back to work legislation halting their strike action in the fight for fairness and respect.
Early this morning, the Alberta government fast-tracked legislation imposing a collective agreement on striking teachers and invoked the notwithstanding clause of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms to shield the law from court challenges for the duration of the four-year deal. This is an attack on teachers, and on all unions in Alberta and across Canada.
When Alberta teachers went on strike October 6, they sent a strong message – the working conditions of teachers are the learning conditions of students. Teachers are fighting for better working conditions, including class size limits to better support students. Nurses know this fight all too well.
On behalf of 250,000 nurses and nursing students, the CFNU extends our solidarity with Alberta teachers standing up for all students and quality public education.
In solidarity,
Linda Silas, CFNU President
