The Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions (CFNU), representing 250,000 unionized nurses and nursing students from across the country, stands in solidarity with the people of Cuba amid the dire humanitarian crisis facing the country and its health care system.
Inhumane pressures imposed on Cuba by the United States have placed additional strain on its already beleaguered health care system. Hospitals have suspended surgeries and prioritized urgent care. Health care workers are working through intermittent electricity as the island nation experiences prolonged blackouts.
The CFNU recognizes the resilience of Cuba’s health care workforce and its people in the face of decades of imperialist aggression. We call on the Government of Canada to use all diplomatic and economic tools at its disposal to support the people of Cuba as ongoing fuel shortages limit access to food, water, transportation and health care.
