Dear Minister Philpott,
On behalf of the almost 200,000 nurses represented by the Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions (CFNU), I would like to stress to you the urgent need for a strong Health Accord that will ensure Canada’s health care system is there for Canadians when they need care.
The Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions calls on Health Ministers to recommend that, when First Ministers meet to finalize an agreement, they set a clear course forward for Canada by implementing a Health and Social Accord that includes:
Canada’s nurses recognize that there is a need to support the implementation of these policies through stable funding and coordinated health human resources planning. We also strongly believe that federal resources transferred for health care should be invested in health care and that there must be accountability and transparency to ensure the designated use of funding.
We also stress that it is time we stop wasting millions of health care dollars by not implementing a National Pharmacare program.
As frontline health care workers, nurses play an important role in delivering quality patient care. Canada’s nurses are dedicated professionals, and they understand that health does not begin and end within our hospitals or clinics. These recommendations represent a movement towards a Health in All Policies approach and hopes for broader commitments that will positively impact all people living in Canada.
I look forward to working with you to support our public health care system.
