Workplace Violence Toolkit

Workplace Champion’s Step-by-Step Guide

Action is the difference between having and wanting. As nurses, it is not enough to want a violence-free workplace, it demands action from all of us to achieve it. As union members, we know that to achieve change, we have to work together and confront those who have the power to make change. This section is for you, the nurses who are working to make change in your workplaces. Included are resources and tools to make this change in your workplace, in your province, and in the laws.

How can I make a difference to prevent violence in my workplace?

  1. Write your Member of Parliament or member of provincial legislature on No More Violence in Health Care Workplaces, using CFNU’s app SpeakUp.
  2. Sign a Nurse Safety Pledge (NSNU)
  3. Participate in workplace violence prevention activities:

If Workplace Violence Happens

  1. Seek medical attention and let your supervisor know if you need to leave the area.
  2. Notify your supervisor or manager about every incident – even if there was no injury.
  3. Report it AS SOON AS POSSIBLE using the incident reporting process for your workplace.
  4. Contact your union representative on the Joint Occupational Health & Safety Committee (JHSC)
  5. Document the incident in detail to help the JHSC or bargaining unit president in making the case to the employer/provincial government.
  6. Take care of yourself: contact your Employee Assistance Plan.
  7. Take a course to build your personal resilience or workplace violence training
