Healthy aging, dignified care

Healthy aging, dignified care: Lessons on seniors’ care from Denmark

The COVID-19 pandemic exposed an urgent need to reform seniors’ care and long-term care (LTC) in Canada to ensure seniors are treated with dignity and nurses are supported to provide the best care possible.

The study tour examined how Denmark supports their aging population, with home and community care at the centre. Healthy aging, dignified care: Lessons on seniors’ care from Denmark is informed by these examples of person-centered care, staffing standards, prevention and rehabilitation programs, and memory care.

This report recommends that a national seniors’ care strategy for Canada be developed with nurse and health care worker organizations, seniors’ advocacy groups and Indigenous Elders. The strategy must be supported by legislation enforcing quality standards and sustained through long-term financial agreements.
