Tracia Batson-Dottin trained internationally to become a nurse in Barbados. When she moved to Canada, she experienced first-hand the systemic racism lingering over our health care system. In 2016, Tracia applied for a job at her workplace. As the only internal candidate, she had an inside track. However, her employer passed on her in favour of an external candidate. When she asked for feedback on her application, she found the hiring process lacked integrity and due process, which only added to the feeling of being judged by the colour of her skin, rather than her experience and ability.

Equity for everyone.

At Vancouver General Hospital, registered nurses Lindsay Manning and Sandra Ramos responsibilities extend far beyond their clinical duties. As union stewards, Lindsey and Sandra are at the forefront of advocating for equity in their workplace. Their story reminds us of the power of collaboration and the importance of giving voice to underrepresented groups in all professions, including nursing.

Sumoud Noubani has had a tough time making her way into Canada’s health care system. Originally from the Middle East, Sumoud thought her international experience would be valued in Canada. In reality, it's been the opposite.

Sandra Ramos, a psychiatric nurse of 18 years, has encountered racism and discrimination throughout her career. But lately, she has seen progress and better representation of nurses from all backgrounds. Sandra and her colleague, Lindsay Manning, talk about how unionism goes beyond wages and work hours—it's about solidarity and reflecting all members. Ramos hopes the next generation of nurses have space to share their traumas, experiences, opinions, and perspectives authentically.
